12 “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” Exodus 20:12 (KJV)
This is the only one of the Ten Commandments that has a promise. I think this means that you will be the one to inherit the farm. You will be the one taking care of your parents in their old age.
When we are children we are taught to obey our parents. Some parents are better at teaching this important principle which helps children get through the tough years ahead, actually protecting them from both harm and evil. Too many forget their aged parents, leaving them for the state to take care off making their last days unhappy.
In some societies, the elderly are honored and held in high regard. They are not thought of as being a burden. My wife is completely helpless. Thank God I can take care of her in my home. I might add the fact that a wise estate planner had me buy long-term care insurance for her years ago. so I can pay her caregivers.
When I was in Korea during the war, old men wearing stovepipe hats like Abe Lincoln, digging in the garbage for something to eat, were held in high regard. The elderly are honored in Japan and other parts of Asia.
Do you honor your parents. Will your days be long upon the land that God giveth thee?
