Even during the Great Depression, we had a turkey on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day. My mother started the work a day or two before Thanksgiving. My job was to grind breadcrumbs and one other else she wanted ground using the hand grinder. I thought my arm would fall off.

TG 1My job was to singe the bird over burning newspapers. Then I took the nut pick and removed the feather stubs. I like playing with fire, but did not like trying to pluck those blasted stubs out of the turkey’s hide.

On Thanksgiving morning, we always chopped wood for the winter. Sometimes the wood was full of knots and hard to slice. It was a good way to work up hunger.

Mother’s dressing and turkey gravy was out of this world. Sometimes I wonder if my sisters know how to make it. I better give them a call.

In a good part of my life, our country has been at war. We certainly have had our ups and downs. But in the long run, we have a lot for which to be thankful. It’s a good time to think about the down and out. Why not take a few cans of goods to your local food kitchen or Salvation Army?
