Even during the Great Depression, we had a turkey on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day. My mother started the work a day or two before Thanksgiving. My job was to grind breadcrumbs and one other else she wanted ground using the hand grinder. I thought my arm would fall off.
My job was to singe the bird over burning newspapers. Then I took the nut pick and removed the feather stubs. I like playing with fire, but did not like trying to pluck those blasted stubs out of the turkey’s hide.
