Having a teenager can be difficult. Heck, being a teenager is difficult. Not only are they getting to the age where they are realizing that their parents are in fact humans who make mistakes, their body chemistry is changing.

People of this age are biologically wired to be more reckless and rebellious than at any other stage of life. That doesn’t mean that you just have to deal with disrespect and bad behavior, knowing that they will, eventually, hopefully, grow out of it.

Here are six ways you can correct a difficult teenager:

Set clear rules.

One of the number one reasons teenagers and parents fight is because a teenager feels a rule is arbitrary or has come out of the blue. If the rules are clear and the reasoning behind them is just as clear, it will not be as difficult to get that child to do what is best for them.

Make sure breaking rules has clear consequences.

A teenager may understand that they are breaking a rule, but if there is not a clear set of consequences attached to that rule, they may not care. If they know what their punishment is and how it will be enforced, they are less likely to act out.

Stay calm when speaking with your child.

It can be tempting to respond with the same attitude when your teen gives you lip during a discussion. This will only perpetuate the cycle and will ultimately lead to that child emotionally locking you out.

Ignore the small annoyances.

If your child sighs heavily while taking the trash out—ignore it. When he gets home from his freshman year of college, he’ll have realized you were just trying to teach him how to keep a tidy house and he’ll regret complaining about it in the moment. He won’t forget, however, how you made a big deal out of those small complaints.

Value his thoughts and opinions. If he says he doesn’t like Chinese food, don’t force him to eat Chinese food. Show him that you value his input, thoughts, and feelings as much as any other adult’s.

Get to know his or her friends.

His friends may unkempt, black-clad, pierced loud-mouths, but they’re probably still good kids. If they’re not, getting to know them can will allow you to have a discussion with your teen about the importance of the people he hangs out with.

Bring Out Talents

Encourage your child to find something he loves to do and is good at. If he loves to do it, he will probably become good at it, so the passion must come first. If possible, let him try a few different things before asking him to choose an activity that he really enjoys. Then, let him throw himself into. A hobby that gets him out of the house, interacting with other children, and developing a skill is ideal for helping a child become well-adjusted and happy.

When our children were young I painted with them, wrote with them, played music with them. We we got snowed in in Iowa, we abandoned all  house rules and got down on the floor and played with the kids until they fell asleep. That way the kids were not frustrated by being snowed in for a week to ten days and neither were we.

Help him find and foster his own learning style. Not everyone learns the same way. Those whose minds work differently may suffer in classes where the curriculum is catered only to one learning style. If he doesn’t respond to the teaching style that works for most of the rest of his class, help him find the way that he does learn best and help him arrange information so that he can learn and recall it in his own way.

Read to Your Child

Read to your child. Reading to and with your child is the best way to raise a child who loves to read. Readers are more likely to be well-adjusted, open-minded, intelligent people, who can quickly and easily store, process, and utilize information. It’s also a low-cost, high-engagement, mind-growing pursuit that will benefit them even decades after they’ve left home.

Have dinner as a family. As often as possible, get together and eat dinner as a family. Remove Negative Media

There will be music, articles, television shows, and movies that encourage you to have a negative outlook on life. If you want to remain positive, you will have to remove those influences from your life. The things that you read, listen to, and watch have a huge effect on how you feel and what you do, so make those things positive.

See Things As They Are

Learn to see things as they really are. It really annoys me when someone cuts me off in traffic, largely because I choose to believe that they have done it on purpose and with malicious intent, when the truth is probably the opposite, and, really, does it matter? I’m safe, they’re safe, no harm, no foul. Don’t make mountains out of things that really are molehills.

Don’t Let Fear Run Your Life

Stop letting vague fears hold you back from specific actions. Learn to ask yourself what the worst thing is that could happen—and be reasonable. If you want to take a chance with your career and ask for a raise, what’s the worst that could happen? Your manager will say no. At least you took the chance and asked. The best thing that could happen usually far outweighs the worst thing.

Think About Your Appeal to Others

Negative people can add to the discouragement of others. For that reason, others don’t like to be around negative people. The Christmas Spirit Is Still Here

Things have not really changed.

When I was a kid, back in the Great Depression, Christmas was commercialized as it is today. Most of us kids didn’t get much for Christmas, usually one present if our parents could afford it, or if a kind neighbor from the church left it on our front porch.

There were a few kids that got tons of presents. One of my friend’s father was a paper hanger, a very good one, who’s name was “Heber,” one that the rich people could afford. I don’t think he was out of work one day in his life.

We used to hang our own wallpaper. Dad taught me how to do it and after that it was my job. It was always a very funny event and my work did not compare with Heber’s work in any way. I can still see myself hung up in paper and paste.

I don’t know how good Adolph Hitler was as a paper hanger, I just wish that he had stuck with it and stayed out of politics.

Later, when my folks were on their own, the kids all raised, Heber came in and scraped off all wallpaper in my folk’s home and did the job right. In fact, it looked fantastic.

I never saw Heber without a cigar in his mouth. He was a jolly man. Why wouldn’t he be? He had a job.

Heber’s wife could always buy his kids ton of presents and she certainly did.

Down Town Salt Lake

Yes, the stores downtown in Salt Lake City were loaded for Christmas. We used to wander from store to store to see what we couldn’t have.

We also took up to tugging at Santa Claus beards to see if it was really Santa Claus or a helper or just some guy who was trying to make a buck.

Sometimes we had to run out of the store.

The effective commercialization of Christmas is most evident on television and the Internet. Take Walmart for example. They blessed us with commercials from morning till night telling us how Walmart was going to make Christmas much more meaningful to us.

Well it certainly was meaningful to Walmart, not so much to their employees, because it filled their coffers with our hard-earned dollars, much of which was debt that some of us took on and will be paying for until next Christmas.

That seems to be the cycle nowadays, overspending at Christmas time.

But Walmart was not the only company in their slugging away. All of the major department stores were in there with their Christmas sales and their television ads. The online stores were doing a booming business.

I think I got several promotional offers from Amazon every day, partly because I’m a customer on Amazon, being too lazy to get out of my chair, and I also promote Amazon products on some of my websites. I don’t learn anything doing it, maybe enough to buy a good book, but that is it.

Friend of mine bought a new Volvo from his Amazon commissions. He knows what he is doing.

Two ladies from a certain church knock on my door every month. We are good friends. I asked them what they are doing for Christmas. They said that they didn’t celebrate Christmas.

That is true of a number of churches. The Jews do not officially celebrate Christmas, they have Hanukkah with the kids get presents for days on end. But some celebrate Christmas to just for the kids.

Back When We Were Not Around

In the early days of Christianity, the Church turned pagan holidays into Christian holidays. They decided that the winter solstice celebration should be the very day that they would celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

The Scriptures say that the shepherds were in the fields when Jesus Christ was born. Jesus was born in this spring or summer or fall. My church has decided that he was born on April 6.

I guess if we had existed back in those days, we would have placed the day for celebration of Jesus’s birth on the pagan holiday that we now celebrate as Easter, the time of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Charities’ Spirit of Christmas

Christmas time is the time when I get hundreds of letters from charities asking for donations for this good cause or that bad one. Some charities pay pay much of their money to the executives. Little gets to the folks that made it. Over the years, I have read about charities sponsored by police organizations, American Indian organizations and veterans organizations as being those ripping off the public. I suggest that you check out your charities on the Internet. Place “charity scams” and the name of your charity in the address bar of your browser. See what comes up! Some charities are in the courts.

Honest Charities are Very Important in Our Society

I still give to about a dozen charities. With care for my wife amounting to tens of thousands of dollars quarterly, I had to cut back.

I hated to do so, but that is just a fact of life. I am 83 years old, have not worked for 20 years, and I’m living on money I stashed away, a couple of retirement checks and Social Security.

Maybe I could do more, but I got a second heart valve replacement this summer and the doctor say I might live a few more years. So I have to watch my money.

pennyPennies from Heaven

The envelopes that I receive asking for money usually tell me how important I am and they include a small gift. The Indian charities might send me a dream catcher. They usually end in the waste basket. How many dream catchers and you hang on your walls?

Sometimes I get a little Indian blanket. I guess I could put it over one of my wife’s dolls. But I always get labels for mailing from every charity on the globe. I don’t need always labels. I can’t give them away because I have my name on them so I guess you know what happens to them.

Some organizations put a coin in the envelope out where I can see it. Surely I will open that envelope! Well, to tell you the truth, I just dig the coin out with my finger and toss it in my coin bowl so my grandkids can dig in their when they need a coin. My wife’s caregiver is also allowed to dig in their whenever she needs a coin or two.

Other Way of Giving

My gifts to charity are down so it would be good if I could give some time to charity.

I use to do that. When we lived in Arizona, my friend Mark and I worked on four homes for Habitat for Humanity. That was great sport. We went every day and we loved it, swinging a hammer, still swinging with bloody fingers and all that.

We helped build an archaeology museum for the historical society and we often worked in the original museum. It was great fun.

But now I can hardly lift a hammer, say nothing about swinging the thing. I surely could could not push concrete down the chute which was one of my favorite things to do.

Donating in Kind

You can donate it kind. I gave a couple of truckloads of stuff to Deseret Industries and we took some stuff down there too.

We have a food bank here in my cow town and they accept groceries if I take them over there or leave them on the front step for the Boy Scouts or our mailman.

When I was working in New Jersey, the plant manager had a sign on the wall that said integrity is being good when no one is watching. I think that sums it up. If you have integrity you will:

  • be dependable and trustworthy
  • do the right thing when it is not popular
  • pay your debts and obligations
  • be good when other people are not watching.

It is so easy to get into debt. But what is the best way to get out of debt?

Cut Spending

We are tempted to over spend without even thinking about it. When I go to the grocery store or Costco or a super market, I always buy things I don’t need even if my wife’s caregiver gave me a list.

My food shelves always have more stuff than I intended. I also buy too many dairy products. It’s enough to make my wife’s caregiver scream, “Stick to the list!”

Kids are great for pointing out things they want. Sometime rather that put up with the screaming, parents give them what they want.

Sometimes something that is completely serviceable is replaced for no reason. I sold shoes part time before I went back to graduate school just to gain a few bucks. One lady came in with her daughter all the time and replaced her daughter’s shoes every few weeks. Telling her the size was the same and the shoes were identical to what she had did no good at all. I imagine she did the same thing with everything else.

Here are some ways to reduce spending:

1. Operate within a budget. Spend what you can afford.

2. Make things do or repair them. The corollary to this is to do without.

3. Don’t take the kids grocery shopping unless you have to. If you do, lay down the law before you go to the store, not in the store.

4. Eat something before you go grocery shopping.

5. Watch out of the end of the aisle bargains, junk you don’t need.

6. Collect coupons for items you use, not for crap you don’t use or need.

7. Carry cash to the grocery store to the amount you want to spend, no more.

8. Avoid credit card purchases. If you use a card, then make sure you pay it off every month so that you don’t pay interest nor generate debt.

Best Way to Get Out of Debt

If you are burdened with debt, then here are some ways to help you get out of debt:

1. Stop spending beyond your means.

2. List your bills from the lowest balance to the highest.

3. Increase payments on the lowest balance bill.

4. When you get a bill paid off, then put those payments on the next lowest balance bill.

5. Keep up this process until you are down to your house payment, then work on that.

6. Get a work at home project going to help pay off all your bills.

7. Save part of your income (10%) for emergencies and retirement.
