My Grandma Burton

My Maternal Grandmother and Grandfather Taylor and my Grandfather Jones were from the coal mining districts in Wales as depicted in the movie, “How Green Was My Valley. My sister, Alice, who died at age 19, loved this book. I still have her copy. Amazon link to the John Ford movie.

My maternal grandmother was a quaint little lady. When she was born in South Wales, she was so small the doctor said that she would die within a few hours. He also said that they could feed her with an eyedropper if they wanted to. They put her in a sugar bowl and dropped the drops.

Pretty soon, she had grown enough to put in a shoebox. When she was all done growing, she was only 4’2″ tall.

My grandmother was Mary Emily Rosser Martin Taylor Burton. She had so many names because she had so many husbands.

Her first husband was a widower with four children by his first wife. He was killed in a mine explosion in Schofield, Utah in 1900 leaving my grandmother with two additional children. One of them was my Aunt Grace who ran away with a circus, worked in a bear act, and slid down a wire by her teeth.

My grandmother had lived with us for all of my life. She died in 1940 when I was eight years old.

So What Has This Got to Do with Reading?

My grandmother could only read Welch but she wanted to learn to read English. She also wanted to be able to read Scriptures in the English language. So she put her nose into the Scriptures and tried to read. I was in charge of helping her. I was about eight years old. It’s fun to watch children learning reading. Watching my grandmother was no exception.

The process was simple. She placed her finger on a word in the Scriptures and I pronounced it for her. At first it was almost a continuous process. Soon, however, words that she could not read were fewer and further between. It didn’t take her very long to read English because she could already speak the language.

Children learn to speak their native tongue at a very early age and they want to learn to read. The first word I learned to write and read was my name. To this very day, I can still read and write my name and I’m 84 years old. On the other hand, my wife has ALZ and she no longer reads her beloved mystery novels.
